Trust a Licensed Berkeley Home Care Agency with Heart

Alice Home Care has its roots in social services, where our owner and namesake, Alice Lai-Bitker started out. Through her many years in social services and local government Alice knew her true calling was helping independent seniors to age in place as much as possible, with a healthy dose of supporting primary caregivers doing their best to support senior loved ones.

If you’re interested in learning about full-time, part-time, or senior respite care services, please reach out to us online or give us a call, 510-924-8529, so we can listen to your story.

Our free assessments are 100% a courtesy service with no obligation. Clients often tell us these initial assessments gave them the information and support they needed to create a realistic, long-term care plan for themselves, their spouses, or their senior loved ones.

Hiring a Licensed Alameda County Home Care Agency is a Must

Vetting the heart, soul, and experience level of any potential caregiver is essential, but first you must verify their licensure. The safety and security of your loved one is the top priority.

Use the online California Home Care Aide Registry to get started. Agency license numbers should always be listed on their website and any written materials (ours is: 14700029). You should also ask what name the license is registered under. Many licensed agencies operate under the name of the owner who “does business as” the agency name.

Also make sure the agency is licensed and insured.

Benefits of Hiring Licensed Caregivers vs Independent Caregivers

There are many experienced and highly-qualified independent senior home caregivers out there, but you should be aware of the benefits of using an agency vs hiring an independent caregiver contractor.

When you use an agency you benefit from access to caregivers who:

  • Have annual DMV clearance checks

  • Pass complete criminal background checks

  • Have the education, training, and experience required for the job

  • Are well-compensated and provided with benefits and paid sick days (that makes for happier and more satisfied caregivers!)

  • Can be instantly covered by another qualified caregiver when they are running late, call in sick, have a family emergency, or quit without notice

  • Are scheduled according to federal and state labor laws with ample time off

You want to make sure your loved ones have top-notch care from licensed and experienced caregivers each and every time you’re counting on it.

Flexible Home Care Services Options

All of our home care services options are flexible and can be customized to meet each client and family’s needs.

Shifts can be scheduled, overnight, multiple times per week, or on a part-time, full-time, and on a 24-hour care basis. We also offer respite care services designed to give primary caregivers much-deserved breaks (more on that below).

Senior home care services facilitate independent aging-in-place

The large majority of seniors prefer to age-in-place, rather than transfer to an independent or assisted living community. To accommodate that, spouses and families must ensure a few important facets of aging independently at home.

The first is that homes must be rearranged and organized to accommodate safety, security, and accessibility. The second is that seniors need to have access to the same level of social connection and community engagement as they always have. The third is that seniors are taken care of in body, mind, and spirit via nourishing foods, personal hygiene care, and so on.

Alice Home Care services typically fall into one of four main categories:

Companionship

Caregivers provide social stimulation as well as the mobility support and transportation support to get seniors out and about, connecting with their social network and doing the things they love.

Companions keep their pulse on the well-being of the client and communicate any concerns or potential need for increased home care services. They can do just about anything the client wants, including:

  • Companionship and stability while running errands

  • Reading aloud

  • Playing cards or games

  • Listening to music or dancing

  • Watching TV and going to the movies

  • Getting out and about, dining in restaurants, connecting with friends, etc.

  • Attending regular spiritual services, social obligations, club/membership meetings

  • Taking regular walks

  • Gardening

  • And more

The simple act of connecting with other humans beyond the immediate family does a world of good for helping seniors feel independent and like they have a life of their own.

Personal Care

If seniors have a hard time getting around or taking care of daily tasks, and that makes an impact on their sense of self, dignity, and confidence. Self-neglect has negative impacts on both physical and emotional wellbeing.

When you work with us, caregivers are on hand to support:

  • Bathing/showering/shaving

  • Daily grooming tasks

  • Changing

  • Toileting and incontinence care

Light housekeeping and weekly errands/tasks

Seniors who live alone and cannot keep up with weekly chores can wind up in a depressing and dangerous situation in a short amount of time.

Caregivers area available to provide light housekeeping and other routine tasks that keep live moving positively forward.

Examples include:

  • Laundry and linen changes

  • Bathroom and kitchen cleans

  • Vacuuming

  • Dusting

  • Grocery shopping and errand running

  • Meal preparation

  • Helping with general pet care

Respite Care

Let us help you get the break you need. It’s easy for primary caregivers to go from caregiver stress and fatigue to full-on burnout mode. Respite care can be as flexible as you need it to be, giving primary caregivers time to:

  • Take days off

  • Attend children's/family sporting or extracurricular events

  • Take care of appointments and self-care

  • Enjoy weekends off

  • Go on their annual or bi-annual vacations

Berkeley Home Care vs. Berkeley Home Health Care

Home care and home health care are not the same service, even though the terms are often interchanged. Our caregivers are licensed to provide non-medical home care services that can include position changes, medication reminders, and meal/hydration reminders, but cannot address more serious medical care concerns.

That said, we work in tandem with Alameda County home health care service providers to make sure your senior loved one has a full-spectrum experience that includes all of the clinical medical care required while still remaining compassionately cared for and in good spirits.
