Safety First: Verify Licensure with the California Home Care Aide Registry

While careful, kind, and compassionate care should be the cornerstones of senior care services, safety and security are an absolute first priority. Never hire any independent caregivers or a professional caregiving agency without first verifying their credentials.

California’s Department of Social Services provides a free, online license verification tool. You can use it to verify individual caregivers as well as home care agencies, and this should be the first thing you do before scheduling free assessments or interviews.

Click Here to visit the California Home Care Aide Registry.

Agencies typically list their license number on their website and any printed materials. Independent caregivers may be listed by name. Make sure to ask the agency how they are listed in the registry. Some agencies are listed under the owner’s full name, while others may be listed under the agency name.

Licensure is a foundation of due diligence

Licensed agencies perform the detailed and complicated process of vetting their caregivers so you don’t have to. You can always ask for proof of these documents to ensure they are living up to what they advertise.

You want to work with home caregivers who:

  • Have a clear DMV record

  • Passed a complete criminal background check

  • Have experience and training in senior care services

  • Provided verified references

Caregiver credentials should be updated on a regular basis. You should also verify that the caregiving agency you hire is licensed and bonded.

Our Homecare Services Menu

We offer a wide range of senior care services that can be mixed-and-matched to meet your needs. While there are minimum shift hours required for each shift, once you have chosen us as your senior homecare agency, you can schedule our services as little as a few times a month or we’ll assemble a “team” to work around the clock providing full-time or 24-hour care for your senior loved one(s).

Senior home care services are offered in four different areas:

Companionship

There is a direct correlation between consistent senior social engagement and healthy aging. The more withdrawn and reclusive a senior becomes, the more likely s/he is to suffer from depression, loneliness, and anxiety. Seniors who live alone and can no longer drive are less apt to take care of themselves on a daily basis. That chronic lack of social connection can also speed up the progression of age-related physical and mental decline.

Hiring a senior companion to come by once or multiple times a week helps to keep seniors active and positively engaged in the world around them. Besides a listening ear and stimulating conversation, senior companions can:

  • Read out loud

  • Watch and discuss news and politics

  • Play cards, dominoes, or board games

  • Listen to music

  • Reminisce and look through photo albums

  • Dance

  • Watch TV or go the movies

  • Get out and about or dine together in favorite restaurants

  • Take walks or join the client in their exercise routine

  • Accompany them to favorite outings or events around town so they aren’t alone or opting out due to lack of company

  • Transportation services to keep seniors safe on the road while still allowing them to get where they want and need to go

Our clients rave about companion services and how much they improved their quality of life.

Light Housekeeping and errand running

Age-related physical declines such as loss of sight, hearing, mobility, and stamina make it difficult to perform basic housekeeping duties, to go to the store, or to run errands. Fortunately, you can trust us to take care of those things for you.

Our caregivers can do all of the above, including:

  • Bathroom and kitchen cleaning

  • Vacuuming and dusting

  • Linen changes

  • Laundry

  • General maintenance (changing light bulbs, batteries in smoke/CO detectors, switching the time on clocks, eliminating trip hazards, etc.)

  • Grocery shopping

  • Errand running

  • Meal preparation (we can prepare delicious and nutritious meals based on the client’s dietary preferences or restrictions that can be easily reheated later)

Taking over these day to day chores and tasks helps seniors preserve much-needed energy they can put to use taking part in the activities and social events they enjoy.

Personal Care Services

As with the day to day tasks of errand running or cleaning, physical or memory limitations also hinder a senior’s ability to complete daily hygiene tasks. This can lead to feelings of shame or embarrassment, and also contributes to seniors remaining inactive and home-bound - unwilling to be out in public.

Our caregivers are devoted to ensuring seniors age with as much independence and dignity as possible, and personal care services are one of the most invaluable ways we can honor that. During his/her shift, your loved one’s caregiver will ensure your loved one is:

  • Bathed, showered, and/or shaved

  • Dressed in clean clothes

  • Has hair and desired accessories in place

  • Clean and hygienic

We provide toileting care to assist seniors that have difficulty using the bathroom on their own and can also honor incontinence care needs.

Personal care services can become the most important senior care service of all because it allows us to help seniors feel like themselves again.

Non-Medical Health Services

There is a difference between the terms senior home care and home health care, even though they are often mistakenly interchanged. As a senior home care provider, we can provide non-medical health services such as position changes for bed/chair bound clients, medication reminders, eating and hydration reminders, etc., but we are not legally allowed to perform direct medical care.

We are happy to work in tandem with licensed home health care providers whenever we can, which can help to provide well-rounded medical care that encompasses the physical, mental, and emotional well-being, rather than just the clinical basics.

Clients also trust us to support them when they’re ready to transition to palliative or hospice care, where our caregivers become a part of the family caregiving team.

If you are a spouse or family caregiver, odds are care-giving is taking its toll. No one or two caregivers can provide full-time care without taking legitimate, restorative breaks. That is where respite care services come to the rescue.

Without necessary time off to honor your needs and the needs of your family, caregivers are at risk for burnout. Click Here to read more about the risks of caregiver stress and burnout and how to recognize the signs.

Caregiver service is available so primary caregivers have the chance to:

  • Attend social, religious, or family functions

  • Make to children’s sporting events and other extracurricular activities

  • Get a full weekend off

  • Take their annual vacation

  • Observe their own medical, dental, specialist, and self-care appointments

  • Take care of family emergencies

  • Get together with friends and family

Your San Leandro home care agency can tell you more about how you can use flexible respite care services to provide optimal quality of life for the caregiver and the client.
